Pop Culture: Britney Spears turns 27, a Decade of Decadence

Never completely interested or enthralled in such Pop culture, yet aware of its effect on our society, it is noteworthy that Britney Spears turns 27 tomorrow. I can remember when she came on the pop scene, back in 1999 with her hit, ”Baby One More Time.” I was going through my own ups and downs, going from a difficult Navy experience to a job as an IE for 3rd party logistics company for Kroger.

The joke then on Brit was that her boobies were getting bigger, unnaturally…God, it seems almost trivial now in the Botox, Reality TV world in which we have found ourselves digressing into on a daily basis. But she was all about being fawned over, saying she was “saving herself” for the right guy. Around that time (1999-2001, maybe), Justin Timberlake was on her corny-as-Kansas lips.

It seems that every time she seems destined to “take off” in a new “creative” direction, as much as a POP diva can, she would flake or tack to another course, usually off the cliff of sanity. Not that it matter all that much, but it seems eeriely similar to an American society that goes that route every time it feels threatened or unsure of itself. (Post 9/11)

As Britney’s story played out on TV, videos, legacy print media and through the blossoming Web 2.0 sites, we all got a pathological dosage of what it is to be her – whether we really wanted it or not. Take the picture below – or the weird kiss between Britney and MaDonna. Now, think: Britney is 27 and MaDonna is 50. A real Mom kissing a potential daughter (turned bad mother) like that? Wow.

Now, it is tough to be a Hollywood/Entertainment icon. To have all these people prying into your life, peeping out your particulars on the Net, inventing half-truths and putting your laundry out on the line of America’s favorite stalkerazzi shows, Extra!, for example. But really, does it take that much skill to just be a bit more normal?

I’ve had my pathos in life, but I never had the perceived talent, the fame and the money that these spoiled persons had while getting away with decadent behavior. She got it very young, and for that, she got a pass in my book (if my book really mattered) until 21-22. Since 2003, Britney has done just about everything one can do wrong to get a career on track, a marriage, or two, or three stable, and her kids (something I’ll never have) a sense of normalcy. Some just never learn.

Momma Brit, God, that should be a PSA message to stop certain folks from procreating. I hope she’ll make the next decade: “a decade of delightful music and delicate decision-making while deciding on a definitive direction to her disasterous life.”

But I have slim hopes of that.

It would be like me publishing a successful book (or two), dating an attractive (and) intelligent woman while finally getting to live in the loft, apartment, home of my ultimate desires. Or maybe, just like Britney Spears actually reading this someday.

Happy Birthday, Brit!!!
